We all hear and read about how people criticize and insult Pakistan, and unfortunately there are times when we cannot blame most of the reasons due to the increasing violence. But if there’s one thing I’ve been taught, it’s never to generalize. The good points of Pakistan have been hidden in this layer of violence.Lets reconsider our potential by reviewing our past/present achievements.

Despite all the mishaps, destruction and loss, we’ve shown alot of progress. We still have time to improve more since hoaxes such as Y2K and 21st December 2012 actually did turn out to be a false alarm. One of the most amazing facts which people are seeing is that a majority is protesting the violence. We want to change. And since we’re still living let’s bring out the best of us and our country.

A Tribute to Parveen Shakir (1952-1994).

Parveen Shakir (پروین شاکر‎) (24 November 1952 – 26 December 1994) was an Urdu poet, teacher and a civil servant of the Government of Pakistan.

Parveen started writing at an early age and published her first volume of poetry, Khushbu [Fragrance], to great acclaim, in 1976.^[2] She subsequently published other volumes of poetry – all well-received – Sad-barg [Marsh Marigold] in 1980, Khud Kalami [Soliloquy] and Inkar [Denial] in 1990, Kaf e Aina [The Mirror's Edge] besides a collection of her newspaper columns, titled Gosha-e-Chashm [The Sight Corner], and was awarded one of Pakistan's highest honours, the Pride of Performance for her outstanding contribution to literature.^[2] The poetry books are collected in the volume Mah e Tamam [Full Moon] with the exception of Kaf e Aina.

Parveen died in 1994 in a car accident while on her way to work.

Early career

Parveen started writing at a young age, penning both prose and poetry, and contributing columns in Urdu newspapers, and a few articles in English dailies.^[3] Initially, she wrote under the pen-name, "Beena “Shakir” held two masters degrees, one in English Literature and one in Linguistics. She also held a PhD and another masters degree in Bank Administration

She was a teacher for nine years before she joined the Civil Service and worked in the Customs Department. In 1986 she was appointed the second secretary, CBR in Islamabad.

Education

Shakir was highly educated. She received two undergraduate degrees, one in English literature and the other in linguistics, and obtained MA degrees in the same subjects from the University of Karachi. She also held a PhD and another MA degree in Bank Administration.^[2]

In 1982, Shakir qualified the Central Superior Services Examination. In 1991, she obtained an MA degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, US.

Ghazalyaat

Shakir's ghazalyaat are considered "a combination of classical tradition with modern sensitivity", and mainly deal with the feminine perspective on love and romance, and associated themes such as beauty, intimacy, separation, break-ups, distances, distrust and infidelity and disloyalty.

Most of Shakir's ghazalyaat contain five to ten couplets, often – though not always – inter-related. Sometimes, two consecutive couplets may differ greatly in meaning and context [For example, in one of her works, the couplet 'That girl, like her home, perhaps/ Fell victim to the flood is immediately followed by 'I see light when I think of you/ Perhaps remembrance has become the moon'^[5]].

Shakir's ghazalyaat heavily rely on metaphors and similes, which are repeatedly and thought-provokingly used to bring force and lyricism in her work. A fine example of this is seen in one of her most famous couplets, "Wo tou khushbu hai, hawaon main bikhar jaye ga/ Masla phool ka hai, phool kidher jayega?"^[6] [Translation: He is fragrance and would waft in the air/ the trouble lies with the flower – where shall the flower go?] where Shakir relates 'fragrance' to an unfaithful lover, 'air' to the unfaithful person's secret loves, and 'flower' to the person being cheated. Other metaphors Shakir commonly uses are titli [butterfly] for a Romeo, badal [cloud] for one's love, baarish [rain] for affection, and andhi [storm] for difficulties.

Some of Shakir's ghazalyaat or, more specifically, couplets, have gained an iconic status in Urdu literature. One of her most famous couplets if the one given above. Another famous, Shakir couplet is "Jugnuu ko din kay wakt parakhne ki zid karain/ Bachchay hamaray ehed kay chalaak ho gaye"^[7] [They insist upon evaluating the firefly in daylight/ The children of our age, have grown clever], which is often quoted to comment on the often surprising knowledge and awareness of the 21st century child.

Honours

Shakir's first book, Khushbu, was awarded the Adamjee Award. Later, she was awarded the Pride of Performance, one of Pakistan's highest honours

Upon her death, the Parveen Shakir Trust was established by her close friend, Parveen Qadir Agha. The Parveen Shakir Trust organises a yearly function and gives out the "Aks-e-Khushbo" award.

In 2013, Pakistan Post issued a commemorative postage stamp of Rs 10 denomination on Perveen Shakir’s death anniversary. Shakir died in a car accident in December 1994, in Islamabad. It was another rainy day. She was 42.

محمد ابن موسیٰ الخوارزمی وہ پہلے سائنسدان ہیں جنہوں نے حساب اور الجبرا میں فرق کیا اور الجبرا کوباقاعدہ ریاضی کی صنف کو طورپرروشناس کرایا۔

یورپ پہلی بار حساب کے اس نئے سسٹم سے بارھویں صدی میں روشناس ہوا جب برطانوی محقق رابرٹ آف چسٹر نےالخوارزمی کی شہرہ آفاق تصنیف ’’کتاب الجبر والمقابلہ‘‘ کا ترجمہ کیا۔

الخوارزمی کو متفقہ طورپردنیا بھرمیں الجبرا کا بانی سمجھا جاتا ہے اورلفظ الگوریتھم بھی ان کے نام سے کشید کیا گیا ہے۔

علم بصریات پردنیا کی سب سے پہلی اورشاہکارتصنیف کتاب المناظرابن الہیثم نے لکھی تھی۔ کروی اورسلجمی آئینوں پرتحقیق بھی ان کا شاندار کارنامہ ہے۔ انہوں نے لینس کی میگنی فائنگ پاور کی بھی تشریح کی تھی۔ انہوں نے اپنی خراد پرآتشی شیشے اورکروی آئینے بنائے۔ حدبی عدسوں پران کی تحقیق اور تجربات سے یورپ میں ما ئیکرو سکوپ اور ٹیلی سکوپ کی ایجاد ممکن ہوئی تھی ۔ ابن الہیثم نے محراب دار شیشےپر ایک نقطہ معلوم کرنے کا طریقہ ایجادکیا جس سے عینک کے شیشے دریافت ہوئے تھے۔

ابن الہیثم نے آنکھ کے حصوں کی تشریح کے لئے ڈایا گرام بنائے اور ان کی تکنیکی اصطلاحات ایجاد کیں جیسے ریٹنا ، کیٹاریکٹ ، کورنیا جو ابھی تک مستعمل ہیں ۔ آنکھ کے بیچ میں ابھرے ہوئے حصے پتلی کو اس نے عدسہ کہا جو مسور کی دال کی شکل کا ہوتا ہے۔ لاطینی میں مسور کو لینٹل کہتے جو بعد میں لینس بن گیا۔

دنیا کا سب سے پہلا کیمرہ یعنی پن ہول کیمرہ بھی ابن الییثم کی ہی قابل فخر ایجاد ہے جس سے تصویری صنعت کا آغازہوا۔

کافی

خالد نام کا ایک عرب ایتھوپیا کے علاقہ کافہ میں ایک روزبکریاں چرارہا تھا۔ اس نے محسوس کیا کہ اس کے جانور ایک خاص قسم کی بوٹی کھانے کے بعد چاق و چوبند ہوگئے تھے۔ چنانچہ اس نے اس درخت کی بیریوں کو پانی میں ابال کردنیا کی پہلی کافی تیارکی۔ ایتھوپیا سے یہ کافی بین یمن پہنچے جہاں صوفی ازم سے وابستہ لوگ ساری ساری رات اللہ کا ذکرکرنے اور عبادت کر نے کے لئے اس کو پیتے تھے۔ پندرھویں صدی میں کافی مکہ معظمہ پہنچی، وہاں سے ترکی جہاں سے یہ 1645ء میں وینس (اٹلی) پہنچی ۔ 1650ء میں یہ انگلینڈ لائی گئی۔ لانے والا ایک ترک ’’پاسکوا روزی‘‘ تھا جس نے لندن سٹریٹ پرسب سے پہلی کافی شاپ کھولی۔ عربی کا لفظ قہوہ ترکی میں قہوے بن گیا جو اطالین میں کافے اور انگلش میں کافی بن گیا ۔

طبیبوں کی رجسٹریشن کا کام سنان ابن ثابت نے 943ء میں بغداد میں شروع کیا تھا۔ اس نے حکم دیا کہ ملک کے تمام اطباء کی گنتی کی جائے اورپھر امتحان لیا جائے۔ کامیاب ہونے والے 800 طبیبوں کو حکومت نے رجسٹر کرلیا اور پریکٹس کے لئے سرکاری سرٹیفکیٹ جاری کئے۔ مطب چلانے کے لئے لا ئسنس جاری کر نے کا نظام بھی اس نے شروع کیا ۔ دیکھتے ہی دیکھتے پوری دنیا میں ڈپلوما دینے اور رجسٹریشن کا سلسلہ شروع ہو گیا جو ابھی تک جاری ہے ۔

گھڑی

یورپ سے سات سو قبل اسلامی دنیا میں گھڑیاں عام استعمال ہوتی تھی ۔ خلیفہ ہارون الرشید نے اپنے ہم عصر فرانس کے شہنشاہ شارلیمان کو گھڑی (واٹر کلاک )تحفہ میں بھیجی تھی ۔ محمد ابن علی خراسانی (لقب الساعتی 1185ء) دیوار گھڑی بنانے کا ماہر تھا ۔ اس نے دمشق کے باب جبرون میں ایک گھڑی بنائی تھی۔

اسلامی سپین کے انجنیئرالمرادی نے ایک واٹر کلاک بنائی جس میں گئیر اور بیلنسگ کے لئے پارے کو استعمال کیا گیا تھا ۔ مصر کے ابن یونس نے گھڑی کی ساخت پر رسالہ لکھا جس میں ملٹی پل گئیر ٹرین کی وضاحت ڈایاگرام سے کی گئی تھی ۔ جرمنی میں گھڑیاں1525ء اور برطانیہ میں 1580ء میں بننا شروع ہوئی تھیں۔

اسلام دنیا کا واحد مزہب ہے جس نے جسمانی صفائی پر انتہائی زور دیتے ہوئے اسے دین کا حصہ قرار دیا ہے یہی وجہ ہے کہ جہاں مسلمان اپنےجسم کی صفائی باقاعدگی سے کیا کرتے تھے وہیں دانتوں کی صحت کے لیے مستقل بنیادوں پر مسواک کا استعمال بھی کرتے تھے۔

سلطنتِ عثمانیہ میں مہتران یا مہترخانہ کے نام سے منسوم دفتر جنگی کے دوران جنگی ساز بجایا کرتا تھا۔ محققین کے مطابق سلطنتِ عثمانیہ وہ پہلی حکومت تھی جو کہ جنگوں کے دوران فوجی ساز کا مسلسل استعمال کرتی تھی تاآنکہ جنگ ختم نہیں ہوجائے۔

یورپ نے عثمانیوں سے جنگ کے دوران جب سازوں کو نفسیاتی اعتبار سے انتہائی کارآمد دیکھا تو انہوں نے بھی اسے اپنالیا۔

امریکہ کے رائٹ برادرز سے ایک ہزار سال قبل اندلس کے ایک آسٹرونامر، میوزیشن اور انجنئیر عباس ابن فرناس نے سب سے پہلے ہوا میں اڑنے کی کوشش کی تھی ۔ ایک مؤرخ کے مطابق 852ء میں اس نے قرطبہ کی جامع مسجد کے مینار سے چھلانگ لگائی تاکہ وہ اپنے فضائی لباس کو ٹیسٹ کر سکے۔ اس کا خیال تھا کہ وہ اپنے گلا ئیڈر سے پرندوں کی طرح پرواز کر سکے گا ۔875ء میں اس نے گلائیڈر سے ملتی جلتی ایک مشین بنائی جس کے ذریعہ اس نے قرطبہ کے ایک پہاڑ سے پروازکی کوشش کی۔ یہ فضائی مشین اس نے ریشم اور عقاب کے پروں سے تیارکی تھی وہ لگ بھگ دس منٹ تک ہوا میں اڑتا رہا مگراترتے وقت اس کو چوٹیں آئیں کیونکہ اس نے گلائیڈر میں اترنے کے لئے پرندوں کی طرح دم نہ بنائی تھی۔

دنیا کا پہلا اسپتال قاہرہ میں احمد ابن طولون کے دورِحکومت میں 872ء میں قائم کیا گیا جہاں مریضوں کو مفت طبی امداد دی جاتی تھی۔ اسپتال میں مریضوں کی تیمار داری کے لیے باقاعدہ تربیت یافتہ نرسیں اورتربیت کا شعبہ بھی تھا بعد ازاں اسی اسپتال کی طرزپربغداد اور پھردنیا بھرمیں اسپتال قائم کئے گئے۔

Bill Gates's grief as girl computer genius dies after epileptic fit aged just 16

A teenager who aged nine became the world's youngest Microsoft Certified Professional has died.

Computer genius Arfa Karim Randhawa, 16, from Faisalabad, Pakistan, died on Saturday night after complications resulting from an epileptic stroke.

The Microsoft Certified Professional award is a title given to those who master the company's programs and is often used by adults to further their careers in the tech field.

After being given the certification, Karim was subsequently invited to visit Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, by the conmpany's founder Bill Gates.

Karim, then ten, met with Gates and other Microsoft executives during the visit, impressing them with her knowledge of programming at such a young age.

According to Geo.TV, after Karim was taken in to hospital, Gates reached out to the family and offered to pay for her medical care. It was reported he also proposed moving Karim to the U.S. for better treatment, although doctors decided it was against  her best interests given she was on a ventilator.

Her father, Amjad Karim, revealed that he was saddened to learn of her death and the loss of such a rare talent.

Funeral prayers were offered on Sunday in Lahore before her body was taken to her native village Ram Dewali, Faisalabad, for burial.

Scores of people, including Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, ministers, politicians, friends and Karim's fellow students gathered to support the grieving family during the procession.

According to local reports, Karim went into a coma on December 22 after suffering an epileptic attack and cardiac arrest.

She was admitted to treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Lahore and was on life support at the Intensive Care Unit when she suffered a tracheotomy complication on Saturday evening that resulted in bleeding in her throat.

Despite earlier reports her progress had improved, doctors were unable to save her.

Karim rose to international fame when she became the youngest MCP at the age of nine in 2005.

As nation.com.pl reports, her father thanked the Microsoft founder for his efforts, and said that his daughter was a spark that 'got attention and love from everyone on the globe.'

The young girl indeed made her country proud, representing Pakistan around the world with her incredible aptitude and skill.

Karim received the Fatimah Jinnah Gold Medal in the field of Science and Technology, presented by the Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2005, and was also the recipient of the President’s Award for Pride of Performance.

In November 2006, she was invited by Microsoft to be a part of the keynote session in the Tech-Ed Developers conference in Barcelona. She was the only Pakistani among over 5,000 developers in that conference, themed 'Get ahead of the game'.

A permanent monument is also to be erected in her honour.

The IT Media City in Karachi will be renamed after the computer prodigy, and will now be known as Arfa Karim IT Media City, Karachi, according to local media reports.
